Ethernet in general and Ethernet for the industry

Ethernet concepts and technology | Ethernet in the industry | Real Time Ethernet | Fast Ethernet | Gigabit-Ethernet | Tools

You will find in this page basic informations about Ethernet and industrial Ethernet - basics about the standard and others various implementations and extensions such as Real Time Ethernet, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet: the protocols, the topologies, the architectures, the addresses, the interfaces, the wiring... You will also find some useful tools such as Ethereal.

"Ethernet is ubiquitous, flexible, simple and delivers true price/performance through enormous economies of scale. [...] From its origin more than 25 years ago, Ethernet has evolved to meet the increasing demands of packet-based networks. [It has] proven low implementation cost, reliability, and relative simplicity of installation and maintenance [...]"

"The term Ethernet is synonymous with so many technologies. The Ethernet standard is IEEE Std. 802.3™-2005 plus any approved amendments or corrigendum and is developed by IEEE 802.3 Working Group. The cabling standards for the Ethernet media are developed by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 3 and TIA TR-42. There are a few standards for Ethernet Media Access Control (MAC) Clients. The most popular are the Provider Bridging standard developed by IEEE 802.1 Working Group and TCP/IP which is developed by the IETF."

The Ethernet Alliance

Ethernet : concepts, technologies, documentation

Basics | Charles Spurgeon | The Ethernet Alliance

"The mission of the Ethernet Alliance is to promote industry awareness, acceptance, and advancement of technology and products based on both existing and emerging IEEE 802 ETHERNET standards and their management."

Ethernet for the industry

"Industrial Networking" | Miscellaneous

"Industrial Ethernet systems currently offer enough network stability and real time capability to build applications that would previously have been run under fieldbus."

"The attraction of Industrial Ethernet rests in its use as a worldwide communications standard. Industrial automation has the potential to be managed over the Ethernet at all levels: operations and control right through to the field level as part of a standardised data communications system. Reaching this goal requires replacement of existing field level fieldbus systems with a real time protocol."

Real time Ethernet - ISO 1588

IEEE 1588 by the NIST

"Measurement and control systems are widely used in traditional test and measurement, industrial automation, communication systems, electrical power systems and many other areas of modern technology. The timing requirements placed on these measurement and control systems are becoming increasingly stringent. [...]"

"The objective of IEEE 1588 is defined in the 'Scope' section of the Project Authorization Request approved by the Standard Board of the IEEE as follows. This standard defines a protocol enabling precise synchronization of clocks in measurement and control systems implemented with technologies such as network communication, local computing and distributed objects. [...] "

Fast Ethernet

Fast Ethernet Consortium | Miscellaneous

"Many client/server networks suffer from too many clients trying to access the same server, which creates a bottleneck where the server attaches to the LAN. Fast Ethernet, in combination with switched Ethernet, can create an optimal cost-effective solution for avoiding slow networks since most 10/100Mbps components cost about the same as 10Mbps-only devices."

GigE - Gigabit Ethernet

Intel | Miscellaneous

"Ethernet is the world's most pervasive networking technology. Gigabit Ethernet is the latest version of Ethernet. It offers 1000Mbps (1Gbps) raw bandwidth, that is 100 times faster than the original Ethernet, yet is compatible with existing Ethernets, as it uses the same CSMA/CD and MAC protocols. When Gigabit Ethernet enters the market it will compete directly with ATM." [...]

Tools

Wireshark is the new name of the network protocol analyser Ethereal.

"Wireshark is used by network professionals around the world for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and education. It has all of the standard features you would expect in a protocol analyzer, and several features not seen in any other product. Its open source license allows talented experts in the networking community to add enhancements. It runs on all popular computing platforms, including Unix, Linux, and Windows." www.wireshark.org
